چکیده

In recent years, ad hoc networking is experiencing the transition process from being an academic research topic, lab implementation to realistic industrial applications. Ad hoc networks could facilitate the provision of broadband services in rural and mountain regions. Thereby, challenging the existing digital divide. Furthermore, ad hoc networking could unveil the affordable and necessary infrastructure to deliver both multimedia services and to facilitate territorial marketing and public safety applications. However, significant challenges need to be addressed before broadband services with QoS can be delivered to remote and inaccessible areas through this technology paradigm. This paper focuses on the role that the ADHOCSYS project will play on pursuing such goals addressing relevant challenges for such infrastructure. In particular several challenges such as power supply, routing protocol and security issues will be faced and discussed in details.

Deploying and Experimenting Wireless Ad Hoc Networks in Mountainous Regions for Broadband Access

The multi-hop wireless networks developed by the FP6 IST ADHOCSYS project provide a cost-effective solution for providing broadband access in mountainous regions. The solution is based on ad hoc networking technologies, created using cheap off-the-shelf hardware equipment, open source software, and an enhanced version of the OLSR routing protocol. This paper describes the implementation, instal...

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

Optimal placement and channel assignment of relay stations in heterogeneous wireless mesh networks by modified Bender's decomposition

Fixed Broadband Wireless Access (FBWA) technology is designed to serve as a wireless DSL replacement to provide broadband Internet access in underserved areas where no other access technology exists. Due to the enormousness of the target service area, relay equipment play an important role in such networks, and the installation and maintenance cost of the network is directly proportional to the...

Intuitionistic fuzzy logic for adaptive energy efficient routing in mobile ad-hoc networks

In recent years, mobile ad-hoc networks have been used widely due to advances in wireless technology. These networks are formed in any environment that is needed without a fixed infrastructure or centralized management. Mobile ad-hoc networks have some characteristics and advantages such as wireless medium access, multi-hop routing, low cost development, dynamic topology and etc. In these netwo...

Evaluation of a BIBD Based Directional MAC Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

The use of directional antennas in wireless ad hoc networks can significantly improve global performance due to a high spatial channel reuse. Nevertheless, its introduction poses new location dependent problems related to the MAC protocol. In this paper, the Balanced Incomplete Block Design theory has been exploited to develop a new MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks using directional ant...
